Gill Breaks Captain's Record with Monumental 269 at Edgbaston
Shubman Gill made a captain's knock of 269 at Edgbaston with multiple records on day 2 of the second test against England. This led India to a commanding 587 in the first inning. The 25-year-old skipper surpassed Virat Kohli's previous captaincy best of 254 not out. Also, he broke the record for the highest score of any Indian batsman on English soil.
Starting at 114 on day 2, Gill tactfully built the Indian inning, which was 211 for 5 at some point. The massive 203-run sixth-wicket partnership he built with Ravindra Jadeja, followed by a vital 144-run stand with Washington Sundar, made India completely dominate the game at the end of the second day of the Test. After the Headingley's collapse, India's tactical decision to reinforce the lower-order batting seems to have immediately paid off.
Gill dispatched  30 boundaries and three sixes, maintaining total control of the game. He was grinding toward Virender Sehwag's all-time Indian record of 319 when he finally gave away a catch to Josh Tongue at square leg. Gill broke the record of  Sachin Tendulkar's 241 not out at the SCG in 2004, the highest score by an Indian batter in Tests outside Asia. Also, this is the fourth time any visiting captain has passed the 250 runs mark in England. Previously, Graeme Smith made it twice during South Africa's 2003 tour, while Bob Simpson scored 311 in 1964,
The psychological damage of this remarkable innings was immediately reflected in England's batters. Akash Deep struck twice in his opening spell, with Gill contributing a spectacular slip catch to dismiss Ben Duckett. Then Mohammed Siraj sent Zak Crawley back to the pavilion, slumping the England team to 25 for 3. However, Joe Root and Harry Brook made a 50-run stand, preventing the England batting attack from complete collapse.
India struggled with team selection before the match, and some crucial decisions, like Burah’s availability, were left to the last minute. At the top of that, the team was alarmed by a security threat on Tuesday after a suspicious package was discovered near their hotel. However, Gill's incredible knock verified the success of India's management team's decision on the changes. Winning this match will be crucial for the Indian team since they have not won any test match at Edgbaston out of eight matches held previously.
