West Indies were bowled out for 27 runs in Kingston on Monday. This was their lowest Test score and the second-lowest in Test cricket history. Mitchell Starc took 6 for 9 in 7.3 overs in his 100th Test at Sabina Park.
Scott Boland claimed a hat-trick and ended with 3 wickets and 2 runs. Australia won by 176 runs and took the series 3-0. West Indies were all out in 14.3 overs chasing 204. Seven batsmen scored ducks. Four players were able to score runs, and the top six players scored a total of 12 runs.
The collapse surpassed the West Indies' previous worst Test score of 51 and fell one run short of New Zealand's record low of 26 from 1955. According to
ESPNCricinfo, the innings was the third-shortest all-out innings in Test history, with only the 30 scored by South Africa against England in 1924 and the recent collapse of Sri Lanka against South Africa in November 2024 being completed quicker.
Pink-ball conditions under lights proved treacherous for the West Indies batsmen. Starc took full advantage of the situation, bowling the ball in both directions to leave the Caribbean team with no solutions. The Australian pace attack was in full control and the West Indies could not form any partnerships or put up any fight.
According to the
ESPNcricinfo match commentary, West Indies captain Roston Chase expressed that it was, "Heartbreaking to be in a position like this.â The Caribbean team was particularly frustrated by the 3-0 series defeat due to the back to back batting collapses throughout the series.
The historic collapse came at a time when Starc was supposed to be celebrating his milestone achievement. Rather, it turned into an exhibition of destructive pace bowling under favorable conditions. The hat-trick by Boland demonstrated the strength of the Australian bowling attack, and the failure of the West Indies to deal with the pace attack showed the difference between the two sides during the series.
Australia's victory demonstrated their championship material before the World Test Championship cycle. The bowling resources of the team were too much to handle by the West Indies who had a hard time against pace during the tour.
